<title>BFGoodrich Tires Announces Five Outstanding Trails for 2010</title>
<link>http://www.hightrails.org/cgi-bin/coranto/viewnews.cgi?id=EkZpVkFyuEFdizwftm</link>
<description>BF Goodrich, United Four Wheel Drive Associations and Tread Lightly! Announce the 2010 Outstanding Trails

BFGoodrich Tires Announces Five Outstanding Trails for 2010

* BFGoodrich celebrates five year anniversary of outstanding Trails program

* The five 2010 selected trails cover the map from Southern California to Pennsylvania

MOAB, Utah – April 1, 2010 – BFGoodrich Tires has announced the five trails selected for its Outstanding Trails program at a presentation held in Moab, Utah during the Easter Jeep Safari. Celebrating the program’s five year anniversary in 2010, the Outstanding Trails program has recognized 19 trails, donating more than $70,000 to clubs across the United States and Canada. The program was established to raise awareness for responsible use, and preservation of, off-road trails while providing aid in the trails’ conservation efforts.

In collaboration with Tread Lightly! and United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA), BFGoodrich Tires is proud to present the 2010 Outstanding Trails:

o Rausch Creek, Pa.
o Drummond Island, Mich.
o Yacolt, Wash.
o Johnson Valley, Calif.
o Holy Cross, Colo.

“The five trails that have been selected this year are well-deserving of the recognition and we’re excited to have them part of the Outstanding Trails family,” said Joe Mazur, light-truck marketing manager, BFGoodrich Tires. “We look forward to honoring the clubs at selected events throughout the year and helping them maintain and preserve these beautiful off-road trails for everyone to enjoy.”

The five 2010 Outstanding Trails cover the map from the Mojave Desert in Southern California to the green forests of Pennsylvania. The trails were narrowed down and selected by UFWDA, Tread Lightly! and BFGoodrich Tires.

BFGoodrich Tires will host several events honoring each of the five trails beginning in June and running through October. The events will highlight the beauty and uniqueness of each trail, as well as educate off-road enthusiasts on the responsible use of trails. A grant will also be awarded to each of the clubs associated with the trails to help conserve the trail’s beauty.

Following is a closer look at each trail:

* Rausch Creek provides a fun, legal place for 4x4 off-road clubs and organizations to go "wheeling." The off-road park consists of 1,700 acres of easy, intermediate and hard trails. Rocks, bowls, hills, the glacial "Rock Creek", club-friendly trails and free on-site camping combine to make Rausch Creek a unique 4x4 destination.

* Drummond Island has some of the most scenic and rugged off-road trails in the state of Michigan. With more than 117 miles of trail in a closed loop system, Drummond Islands’ off-road trails provide a wide range of riding opportunities. Surrounded by the waters of Lake Huron, in a true wilderness setting, the riding experience is un-paralleled by any other place in Michigan. With abundant wild life, lush vegetation and sweeping vistas, the trails on Drummond Island are truly special.

* Yacolt Burn is a new 4x4 trail that expects to have approximately 25 miles of dedicated off-roading [we will add more info prior to distribution, awaiting info].

* Johnson Valley is home to King of the Hammers, the ultimate desert race. Johnson Valley offers a varied landscape for the off-road driver. It is punctuated by steep red rocky mountains, rolling hills, open valleys, dry lake beds and sandy washes. Elevations range from 4,600-feet at Hartwell Hills to 2,300-feet at Melville Dry Lake. The area’s beautiful vegetation consists of creosote scrub, annual grasses, wild flowers and Joshua Trees.

* Holy Cross is a scenic and challenging high mountain trail in central Colorado. It is an old mining trail that gold miners built and used until 1883 when the mines on Mt. Holy Cross played out. One of the more challenging 4x4 trails in Colorado, Holy Cross holds a rating of 8 to 9 on a 10-point difficulty scale.

Each of the trails honored will be highlighted on BFGoodrich Tires’ Nation of GO throughout the year. Nation of GO allows visitors to interact with members, as well as share their experiences on the trails by tracking drives and uploading photos and videos. Visit www.NationofGO.com/OutstandingTrails to view the 2010 Outstanding Trails trailheads.

"United Four Wheel Drive Associations shares the goals and desires of BFGoodrich Tires and the Outstanding Trails program and is a great way to highlight clubs and trails across the country that are promoting responsible off-roading,” said Dave Logan, chairman of the advisory committee, UFWDA. “We enjoy our partnership with BFGoodrich Tires and look forward to continue promoting responsible land use throughout the year.”

“Tread Lightly! is proud to partner with BFGoodrich Tires for the fifth year helping communicate responsible four wheeling,” said Lori McCullough, executive director of Tread Lightly!. “It’s important to tread lightly on designated roads and trails and the Outstanding Trails program does a great job spreading the word.”

Both Tread Lightly! and UFWDA are non-profit organizations dedicated to responsible and ethical outdoor recreation. BFGoodrich Tires collaborated with these two groups to select the finest North American trails, and will continue to work with these organizations on restoration and education initiatives.

<title>Important Information Concerning Hackett and Longwater Gulches!!!</title>
<link>http://www.hightrails.org/cgi-bin/coranto/viewnews.cgi?id=EkuAkZpZyEfWHsmxGh</link>
<description>From Predator 4 Wheel Drive: To the volunteers, who donated their time and energy to trail work on July 18 and 19, thank you. With a small group of hard-working volunteers, the final work on the Teller County portions of both Longwater Gulch and Hackett Gulch was completed. On July 22, Teller County Officials and Forest Service Officials were driven over the trails to get their required approval. Teller County Officials and the Forest Service Officials gave their approval and the Teller County portions of Metberry, Hackett, and Longwater Gulches are now open. Hip, Hip, Hurray for the hard work and dedication of the volunteers.

Only the Teller County portions of these trails are now open. The Park County portions of these trails, the last portions of the trails that lead down to the Platte River, are NOT OPEN. Hackett and Longwater are open only to the Park County line. The Park County line is approximately .25 miles to .5 miles from the river. Metberry is still open to the river.

The volunteer effort to open the Park County portions of the trails will continue. The Park County Commissioners have not determined whether they will open the Park County portions of these trails. They would be opening these trails to provide access, recreation, and tourism to their county. We believe, once the Park County officials see the efforts and the maintenance provided by the volunteers, that they will want to open the remainder of the trails. The closures at the county line, although not popular with many, must be honored. We have the opportunity to show that we are committed to opening these trails. If the closures are not honored or damaged is perceived, Park County may decide against obtaining the easements necessary to open the trails. Park County must be assured that we, the off-road community, will stand behind our work and not abandon the task of maintaining the trails. Park County will not open the trails if they perceive that it will cost them labor, man hours, or money. It is a 100 percent volunteer effort that Park County will be using to open these trails. If they do not believe the volunteers are capable, they will walk away. We must police ourselves. The counties expect us to be responsible and the future of the trails depends upon it. If you see violators, take pictures, get license plate numbers or OHV numbers and report them to the Sheriff’s office. Because these trails are county easements, the County Sheriff can prosecute violators.

Opening these trails has been a very long and slow political process that has taken 100’s of hours of volunteer time and years to achieve. It may be difficult to see the cable closure across the trails, but please respect the closures. With enough patience, energy, and time, we believe the trails will open down to the river.

“Character is what we do when no one is looking.” - H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

There is evidence that motorcycles and ATV’s have been driving around the gates on Hackett Gulch. If you know any motorcycle riders or ATVers, that use this area, please encourage them to pass the word about the closures.

<title>Western Slope 4 Wheelers join forces to clean-up campground</title>
<link>http://www.hightrails.org/cgi-bin/coranto/viewnews.cgi?id=EElkkVAZAurtIkjQJm</link>
<description>Thirty Five Volunteers, which included seven members of the Western Slope 4 Wheelers, participated in the campground volunteer project with the Public Lands Partnership, U.S. Forest Service and the Thunder Mountain Wheelers on Saturday, June 2, 2007. Participants from the Jeep Club were Ken & Bonnie Emory, John Archuleta & Dee Salazar, Chuck & Carol Hughes and Jerry Karnopp. The volunteers assembled at the Public Lands Office in Montrose at 8:30 A.M. and traveled to the Iron Springs Campground via old Highway 90.

Tammy of the Forest Service had a special request of John Archuleta to bring his Jeep, as there was some “winching” to be done. John, Ken & Jerry winched old posts & poles, Bonnie & Dee cleaned out fire pits, Chuck repaired fence, and Carol hauled and placed rocks to define parking and camping places. The other volunteers cleaned restrooms, rebuilt and painted picnic benches, installed a new kiosk and other campground signs.

Thanks to The Eatery of Delta for providing lunch for the volunteers.</description>
