Adopting a 4WD road requires entering into an Adopt-A-Road agreement, or volunteer agreement with the land managing agency. These agreements set forth the communication that will take place between the 4WD club and the agency, as well as the services that both may provide. With a signed agreement volunteers working on adopted 4WD roads are covered under Title 16, Section 558 of the United States Codes as a federal employee.

Forest Service volunteer agreements for groups are form FS-1800-8, BLM volunteer agreements for groups are form 1114-5. You may also use the form on this web site under "Adopt-A-Road".
